CIVIL SOCIETY AND TECH COMMUNITY DESIGN NEW CIVIC TECH SOLUTIONS FOR MYANMAR

47 representatives from Civil Society and the Tech Community came together as part of Innovation Marketplace – a Civic Tech competition – this Thursday, 16th and Friday, 17th March at Phandeeyar: Myanmar Innovation Lab at the heart of Yangon to work on the development of Civic Tech solutions for Myanmar.

Over two intensive days, participants worked in teams to co-design technology-based solutions focused on improving:

  • Access to public information
  • Documentation of key issues affecting the community
  • Public complaint and feedback mechanisms
  • Mobilization of popular support for social change

Participants came with a range of ideas of how technology can be used to improve the life of Myanmar people. Building on the 25 pitches which took place on Thursday morning, 9 teams were formed and worked to refine these ideas and develop strategies to support their implementation:

  1. 6 of these teams were selected to receive funding for further development through a combination of popular vote and a jury, which consisted of leading Myanmar experts from the tech industry.

This team is going to develop a facebook chatbot providing information on public services and public processes, starting with information on how to file taxes, obtain a national ID card and access Yangon municipal services.

This team will work on an automated hate speech monitoring platform, building on sentiment analysis and machine learning to identify primary sources of hate speech and monitor trends

This team is planning to build a facebook chat bot enabling people to report unsafe food for review by Food and Drug Association (FDA).

The aim of this team is to build a mobile app connecting young people (16-30) with information, services and doctors as well as a feature to rate these services.

This team will build and manage an online platform providing a directory of all existing laws and a tracking system enabling citizens to know where a bill is at.

This team will create a standardized reporting system feeding into a centralised database of cases with integrated analytics.

Innovation Marketplace is a joint initiative by Phandeeyar and FHI 360, supported by USAID, designed to support the development new tech solutions for political participation in Myanmar.
