Phandeeyar Accelerator Launches First Cohort

You may have heard of Phandeeyar Accelerator at earlier Phandeeyar events – or maybe you even know someone from one of our startups?! We are now almost a month into the first Phandeeyar Accelerator cohort, and we are excited to bring you this update.

Accelerator Team & Startups

On September 5, 6 of Myanmar’s most high-potential startups moved into our newly renovated Accelerator space. This was following a 3-month recruitment and selection period during which we received 80 applications, saw 21 pitches and conducted 11 in-depth interviews before we selecting the final cohort. One of the keys to a successful tech business is a founding team with the determination and grit to go the extra mile in the essential early days of their startup journey – and we worked hard to make sure that the teams in Phandeeyar Accelerator fit that mold.

Introducing the Phandeeyar Accelerator startups:

This startup is tackling the microloan industry by offering a tech-based solution to lower overhead and help reputable lenders enter this market. The problem in much of the developing world is the overhead for issuing a loan of US$20 or US$25 is not worth the ROI. But, farmers may need this extra bit of cash to buy seeds or equipment — and significantly improve their crop yield. So, predatory lenders have filled this market gap. Zigway is creating a tech-based solution to connect borrowers with microfinance institutions, allowing families all over Myanmar to receive a small loan at a reasonable interest rate.

The startups will stay at Phandeeyar Accelerator for 6 months, after which they will raise additional investment and move to their own offices. We are looking forward to keep you updated on their progress over the coming months. Don’t forget to download their apps and check out their products!

You can read more details about Phandeeyar Accelerator from some of the great coverage we got in both local and international media such as Myanmar Times, Forbes and e27!
